President Barack Obama was sworn into office for a second time this past Monday on Dr. Martin Luther King day in Washington.
The president once again gave us a wonderful speech. This speech was similar to others because it was captivating, moving and he spoke to everyone. No one was left out of this speech. He touched on everything thats happening in the world especially the sandy hook children. He also spoke about equality and he mentioned gay rights which I thought would fit perfectly into this blog post. I planned posting this Sunday but I decided to wait until after the inauguration. I’m glad I did. In the president’s words:
Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law — for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.
– President Barack Obama

The country has mixed views about same sex marriages and relationships. The country is almost split in half on this issue. I wonder why?
Recently I had a conversation with a friend about same sex marriages and the conversation didn’t seem as bad as I thought. We sort of felt the same way. Basically, who are we to judge?
Our generation is known to be the “if its not hurting me, it’s not my business” generation and we’re relaxed about how people choose to live.
But my friend questioned the religion that gay or lesbians individuals may have when deciding to get married. Of course we couldn’t answer the question but we wondered what would God think about it.
We began discussing marriage and spirituality and how the two are connected.
Some may say its not ‘Christian’ to be gay or lesbian. Some may even say well God planned everything and he knew how the world would be at this time. Some even say the bible was written ages ago and times have changed, the world has evolved. As times change, the social norms change, the world and the people should adjust.
There is an argument for both sides. Recent polls has shown that the arguments for both sides are tipping over slowly to the opposite side of where it was 15-20 years ago
A November 26-29 Gallup poll found that 53% of Americans favor same-sex marriage while 46% are opposed.
A November 16-19 CBS News poll found that 51% of Americans support same-sex marriage while 40% are opposed.
A November 7-11 ABC News/Washington Post poll found 51% of respondents support same-sex marriage while 47% are opposed.
Our country today is almost split with our feelings. So does that mean almost half the country isn’t religious and dismiss the teachings of the bible?
Some may say, marriage changed when it became a legal contract.
Some time ago we didn’t have real issues about what married couples received during and after a marriage whether through divorce or death. So times changed and at some point the country felt a need to get involved and “balance” the union of marriage by adding a piece of paper.
So should the courts balance the country again to adjust to same sex marriages? Some would agree… Some would disagree…
Does God agree?
“No matter whether you’re a gay or a mixed race couple; when you’re drawn together, ultimately it doesn’t matter what everybody thinks because it’s so honest, true, and sincere. How can that be wrong?”
― Tegan Quin
“gay marriage… always being an issue for the voting public when it should be an individual‘s private choice.” – G.A. Hauser
… The morality of your marriage may indeed rest between you and God, but it’s that civic and secular paperwork which makes your vows official here on earth. Ultimately, then, it is the business of America’s courts, not America’s churches, to decide the rules of matrimonial law, and it is in those courts that the same-sex marriage debate will finally be settled.
“It may be that same-sex couples will save the institution of marriage.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert
